Charles Spencer Hughes

Corporal Charles Spencer Hughes enlisted at Stoke on Trent , giving his place of birth as Nottingham. He served with the 4th battalion Royal Fusiliers, and landed at Gallipoli with his battalion on 25th August 1915. Following the withdrawal from Gallipoli theatre of war he went onto serve on the Western Front. He was killed in action on 9th November 1916 and he is buried in Euston Road Cemetery, Colincamps, France. grave reference I E 21

An article published in the 'Staffordshire Advertiser,' dated 9th December 1916: - “FENTON. “MEMORIAL SERVICE. – A large congregation attended a memorial service at St. Matthew's Church on Sunday [2nd December 1916] to the late Corp. Charles Spencer Hughes, Royal Fusiliers, who was killed in action on Nov. 9. The 1st, 4th, and 5th Fenton Troops of Boy Scouts, under Scoutmaster Kent, were present. Corp. Hughes took an active part in Church affairs prior to his enlistment in November, 1914, and was a sidesman, a Sunday School teacher, a member of the C.E.M.S., and assistant scoutmaster of the 5th Fenton Troop of Boy Scouts.” Above article courtesy of Jim Grundy and his facebook pages Small Town Great War Hucknall 1914-1918.
