Family History

William Free was born in 1897 at Hucknall In 1901 Census he his living with his mother Hannah J. Johnson (Annie) and his sister Mary Ann and stepfather Thomas Johnson and his 4 children at Railway Terrace, Carlton, Barnsley. By 1911 there are another 4 children in the family and William is employed as a Brick Maker labourer at a local colliery.

Military History

Private William Free, enlisted at Barnsley on 9th September 1914 , he served with the 13th Battalion York & Lancaster Regiment (1st Barnsley), he was killed in action on 1st July 1916 the first day of the Battle of the Somme. He is buried in Euston Road Cemetery, Colincamps.

Extra Information

On both the 1901 and 1911 Census he is shown as being born at Kirkby Folly, Notts. However, SDGW shows his birthplace as Hucknall Torkard.
