Percy Whyatt was born on 12th July 1892 at Hucknall and was the son of James Evans a builder and contractor and Hannah Sophia Whyatt nee Anthony of 'Lyndhurst', Church Drive, Hucknall.His father James Evens Whyatt was born in 1855 in Hucknall and his mother Hannah Sophia Anthony was born in 1858 in Hucknall, they were married in 1878 , their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 8 children , who were : Frank b1881 Radford, Ethel b1883 Radford, Harold b1885 Radford, William Anthony b1887 Radford, Annie b1889 Radford, Percy b1892 Hucknall, Dorothy May b1895 Hucknall and Raymond Selwyn b1898 Hucknall. In the 1911 census the family are living at Lyndhurst, Church Drive Hucknall and are shown as James Evans Whyatt 56 yrs a retired builder and contractor, he is living with his wife Hannah Sophia 53 yrs and their children William Anthony 24 yrs an assistant estate agent, Annie 22 yrs an assistant teacher, Dorothy May 16 yrs a clerk and Raymond Selwyn 13 yrs a scholar, also at the address is Lilian Shepherd 20 yrs from Mansfield she is employed as a domestic servant.
Captain Percy Whyatt, M.C. was commissioned Second Lieutenant and served with 11th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment. he was promoted to Lieutenant in May 1916 and to Captain in April 1917. He served with the British Expeditionary Forces from August 1915. He was killed in action on 18th October 1917 and is buried in Menin Road South Cemetery.(grave ref III.L.3)His Military Cross was announced in the 'London Gazette,' on 1st January 1918.
His brother Second Lieutenant Raymond Selwyn Whyatt M.C joined the Inns of Court Officer Training Corps in October 1916 , he was gazetted to Second Lieutenant in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment in April 1917 and served with the British Expeditionary Force from December 1917. He was killed in action on 13th October 1918 at Neuvilly and was buried at Montigny Communal Cemetery, Nord France grave reference C 4 . Mundella Magazine, Christmas 1918, ROH: 'Whyatt, Percy, Captain, Sherwoods.'The following article was published on 24th October 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “KILLED. “P. WHYATT. “Captain Percy Whyatt, Sherwood Foresters, son of Mr. J. E. Whyatt, Lyndhurst, Hucknall, was killed in action on October 18th. A splendid career as an educationist lay before the young officer at the outbreak of the war, at which period he was 22 years of age. Applying for a professorship at Rangoon College, India, he appeared before the board of examiners and was favourably received. At the same time recognising his country’s needs he also made an application for a commission in the army. By one post he received notification that he had been appointed to the professorship, and next day came news from the War Office that he had been granted a commission in the Sherwood Foresters. His choice unhesitatingly led him to accept the latter, and he thus gave up a professorship with a commencing salary of £480 per year.
