Family History

Walter Joseph Winter was born in 1884 at Nottingham and was the son of the late John Fenn and Matilda Winter née Lenton of 57, Kinglake St., Nottingham His father John Fenn Winter was born in 1855 at Newton, Cambridgshire, he died in 1919 in Nottingham aged 64 yrs, his mother Matilda Lenton was born in 1858 at Maudlin, Norfolk, they were married in 1878 at Wisbech, Camridgeshire, they went on to have the following children, Ellen b1879 Gorfield, Cambridgeshire, John William b1883 Orston, Walter Joseph b1884 Nottingham, Arthur Harply b1885, Nottingham, Albert Leonard b1893 Nottingham, Elsie Matilda b1896 Nottingham and Clarice Hannah b1899 Nottingham. In the 1911 census his parents and siblings were living at 57 Kinglake Street, Nottingham and were shown as John Winter 56 yrs a lace bleacher, he is living with his wife Matilda 53 yrs and their children, Arthur 25 yrs a fitter and labourer, Albert Leonard 18 yrs a joiner, Elsie 15 yrs a hoisery finisher and Clarice 12 yrs a scholar. Walter Joseph married his wife Ada Rutland Lyon (born 18th March 1889 )in 1910 at Nottingham they lived at 113 King's Meadow Road, Nottingham (Evening Post July 8, 1918) and later I1, Cardiff St., Carlton Rd., Nottingham. In the 1911 census Walter Joseph is living with his in laws at 11 Cardiff Street, Nottingham, where they are shown as John Lyon 58 yrs a municipal lamp lighter, he is living with his wife Rebecca Lyon 63 yrs and their daughter Ada Winter 22 yrs a blouse machinist and her husband Walter Winter 26 yrs a curtain packer. Following Walter's death his widow Ada was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week which commenced on 3rd June 1918. In 1920 his widow Ada re married in Nottingham to Walter Morrell.

Military History

Corporal Walter Joseph Winter enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 26th September 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial
