Family History

John William Edwards was born in 1894 the son of Joseph a coal miner hewer and Sarah Ann Edwards née Hughes and the brother of Lilian (née Edwards) Cook. In 1911 he and his mother lived at 80 Stoney Street Sutton in Ashfield with Lilian Cook and her family. Joseph was born in 1859 at Walsall, Staffordshire, Sarah Hughes was born in 1865 also at Walsall, married on 9th November 1884 in Derbyshire they went on to have 6 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.

Military History

Private John William Edwards enlisted on 11th November 1914 at Newark, he gave his age as 20 yrs and 7 months, his address as 10 Bowers Yard, Sutton in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire he stated he was a lamp cleaner at a colliery, posted to the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He embarked from Southampton on 28th June 1915 landing the following day at Rouen. He was killed in action, 1st July 1916, during the attack on Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. He is buried at Foncquevillers Military Cemetery, France. Plot 1, Row L, Grave 27.
