Father: Albert Edward Dowell, born in 1864 at Chard, Somerset and working as a dairyman. Mother: Sarah Jane Dowell, born in 1861 at Ripley, Derbyshire. Brother: Harry James, born in 1892 at Sneinton, Nottingham and working as a milk seller. Sisters: Edith, born in 1895 in Sneinton and Hilda, born in 1897 at Sneinton. The family lived at 59 Henry Street, Nottingham before moving to 28 Leeshill Street, Sneinton, Nottingham. Ernest Dowell married Elizabeth Ann Butler (born 1st October 1886 ) in 1911 at Nottingham. she was a hosiery turner off. They lived at 49 Rossington Street, Sneinton dale, Nottingham before moving to 4 Manor Avenue, St. Stephen Road, Nottingham. They had 2 children, Evelyn born 31st October 1912 and Nora Elizabeth born 14th September 1914, Commencing 20th May 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week. .
Rifleman Ernest Dowell volunteered for service and joined the Sherwood Foresters, No. 20724 and served with them in Gallipoli landing on 30th September 1915 in the Balkans. He was drafted to France and was transferred to 13th Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles. He was killed in action during the Third Battle of Ypres, but his body was never recovered. His name, however, was commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
In memoriam published 31st July 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “DOWELL. – Wounded and missing August 16th, 1917, now reported died on that date, Rifleman Ernest Dowell, Royal Irish Rifles, aged 31 (previously served with Sherwood Foresters in Dardanelles campaign, 1915). – Sadly missed by mother, father, sisters, and brother and brothers-in-law.” Above is courtesy of Jim Grundy and his facebook pages Small Town Great War Hucknall 1914-1918
