Family History

Charles was born in 1898 at Laneham, and was the son of George a roadman working for the district council and Martha Talbot (nee Schofield) of Cottam, Retford . George was born in 1853 at Bothamsall he died 7 July 1918 aged 65 years and is buried in Treswell St John churchyard. Martha was born 1856 at Fledborough they were married on 22nd July 1879 at St Oswalds, Dunham on Trent, they had nine children. In the 1911 census the family are living at Treswell, George and Martha having the following children still living with them, Joseph -Jane - Kate and Charles who is by now 13 years of age and a scholar, George is also putting up three boarders in the home.

Military History

Private Charles Talbot enlisted at Retford, he was killed in action on 1st April 1918 and is buried at Aiz-Noulette Communal Cemetery Extension (grave ref II.E.17).

Inscription family headstone, St John churchyard, Treswell: 'In loving memory of George, the beloved husband of Martha Talbot of Treswell, who died July 7th 1918 aged 65 years. ‘Rest after pain.’ Also of Charles son of the above, killed in action in France, April 1st 1918, aged 20 years. “His duty nobly done.” [And of Martha his beloved wife]'
