John Arthur Underwood was the son of James and Mary Ann Underwood. He was born in 1889 at Glapthorne, Northants living at Village Street. He had an older brother, Walter, but by 1901 he had gained 2 sisters and the family had moved to Lower Street in Glapthorne. 10 years later, John was living with his uncle and aunt, Daniel and Hannah Underwood and his 5 cousins at 206 Mafekingham Street, Worksop, working as an underground steam engine stoker.
Corpl J A Underwood Worksop Guardian 28 July 1916 Officially comes the news that another Worksop man belonging to the Leicestershire Regiment was killed in the attack at Delville Wood. It was Lance Corpl J A Underwood, the son of Mr and Mrs James Underwood, who are now living in Northumberland. The deceased, up to enlistment, was living with his aunt and uncle at 200 Gateford Road and was employed at Shireoaks, and afterwards at Manton Colliery. He joined the Army in September 1914, and has been in France over a year without a break to come home. The news was conveyed in a letter from a man at the front, and it will be noticed the deceased is mentioned in Pte Goodall’s letter which we print this week. The sympathy of all will be extended to Pte Underwood’s relatives in their time of trial.
