Family History

Nathan Chadbourne was born in 1895 at Hucknall and was the son of Frederick a coal miner and the late Mary Jane Chadbourne née Parry of 9 Papplewick Road Hucknall Torkard Nottinghamshire. His father Frederick was born in 1862 at Ashby, Leicestershire and his mother was born in 1863 at Hanley Staffordshire, she died in 1911 aged 49 yrs. They were married in 1882, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have 13 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children, all born in Hucknall were, Walter b1884, Lucretia b1885, Albert b1886, Frederick b1890, Robert b1892, Richard b1894, Nathan b1895, Mary Jane b1897, Henry b1902, Margaret b1904 and Joseph b1906. In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 6 Linby Grove, Hucknall and are shown as Frederick 49 yrs, he is living with his wife Mary Jane 49 yrs and their children, Richard 18 yrs a pony driver underground, Henry 9 yrs a scholar, Margaret 7 yrs a scholar and Joseph 5 yrs. In the same 1911 census we find that Nathan and his older brother Walter have left the family home and are boarding at 10th 5th Avenue, Forest Town, they are living with Uriah Hatcher 26 yrs a coal miner and his family, Nathan is shown as being 16 yrs single a pony driver, underground, his brother Walter is shown as being 27 yrs a coal miner.

Military History

Private Nathan Chadbourne, enlisted on 9th September 1914 at Mansfield , he gave his age as 19 yrs and 27 days, his address as 4 Sixth Avenue, Forest Town, Mansfield, he served with the 1/8th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, landing inb France on 2nd March 1915. He was wounded in action on 25th September 1915 and admitted to the 10th casualty clearing station on 2th September. He was transferred tot he 26th General hospital on 27th September but died of his wounds on 8th October 1915. He is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery
