Family History

He was the son of Thomas and Sarah Thompson. He was the husband of Julia Thompson and father of Nellie Chrissie Thompson. In 1911 they lived at 12 Ryland Crescent, The Meadows, Nottingham. Their daughter, Nellie, died on 21 November 1920 aged 11 years, and was buried in Nottingham Church (Rock) Cemetery. At the time the CWGC record was compiled Julia was living at 49 Ewart Road, Forest Fields, Nottingham. Julia remarried; her second husband, Arthur J Ricketts, died aged 72 on 23 July 1950.

Military History

C.Q.M.S. John Thompson, 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire)Regiment (Welbeck Rangers), he was killed in action on 30th July 1917.He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial

Family grave in Nottingham Church (Rock) Cemetery: 'In loving memory of QMS John Thompson, 17 Sherwood Foresters, beloved husband of Julia Thompson, killed in action at Ypres August 4th (sic) 1917, aged 34 years. Also of Nellie, their beloved child, who died November 21st 1920 in her 12th year. God giveth, God taketh away. Also Arthur J Ricketts beloved husband of Julia, died July 23rd 1950 aged 72.' In memoriam published 30th July 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “THOMPSON. – In loving memory of my dear husband, C.Q.M.-Sergt. J. Thompson (late of Nottingham City Police), Sherwood Foresters, killed in action July 30th, 1917. A soldier's grave a touching thing, where loving hands no flowers can bring, but God in His loving care will guard our loved one sleeping there. – From his loving wife and children. “THOMPSON. – In loving memory of our dear son, C.Q.M.-Sergt. J. Thompson, Sherwood Foresters, killed in action July 30th, 1917. At rest. – From mother and father, sisters and brothers (in France).
