Family History

William Staniland was the second child of Benjamin and Clara Staniland, nee Webster, born in Worksop (as was all the family) in 1889. The family resided for a long time at 35 Cheapside, Worksop. In 1905 William married to Mary and had 5 children before his death

Military History

Pte William Stanniland Worksop Guardian 14 December 1917 Another Worksop soldier to make the great sacrifice is Pte. William Stanniland, of the K.O.Y.L.I., who was killed in action, on November 20th. The official news was received by his wife, Mrs. Mary Stanniland, of 49 Trent Street, yesterday week. Pte. Stanniland was 28 years of age, and leaves five children. He joined the Forces in September last year, and was sent to France last January. Prior to enlisting he was employed at Manton Colliery. A brother of his, Pte, Ben Stanniland, was wounded in September last year, and is now in a Convalescent Home at Wittington. Mrs. Stanniland’s brother, Pte, Robert Smith, Nott’s and Derby’s, is on service in France. Much sympathy is expressed with the family and relatives of the deceased soldier.
