Frederick Caunt was born in 1888 the son of Jesse a coal miner labourer and Mary Caunt née Smith of 6 Sherwood Street East Kirkby Nottinghamshire. Jesse was born in 1860 at Skegby, Mary Smith was born in 1867 at Newark, married on 5th October 1885 at Skegby they went on to have 7 children. Frederick married Elizabeth Ann Buxton (born 17th August 1889) in 1908 at Mansfield, they had 2 sons Harry born 5th July 1908 and Frederick born 26th October 1911 and a daughter Edith Caunt who died in 1915. In 1911 the family lived at 10 Carsic Lane Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire. Elizabeth married Thomas Johnson on 23rd April 1917 and they lived at 47 St Thomas Row Tibshelf Alfreton Derbyshire.
Private Frederick Caunt enlisted at Mansfield he initially served with the service number 17093 in The Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 28 October 1916. having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial (Pier and Face 10B and 12B)
Mansfield Reporter, 17 November 1916: ‘Local Casualties. Private Caunt. After being ‘gassed’ three times, news has been received that Private Frederick Caunt, whose home was at 11, Slater-street, Sutton, was killed in action on October 24th (sic). The deceased soldier, who was 29 years of age, formerly worked as a miner at Tibshelf. He enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers in September, 1914, and, as previously intimated, did not escape injury. He last returned to France about three weeks before he was killed. He leaves a wife and two children.’ (www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk) His brother Private Ernest Caunt enlisted at Mansfield , he went to France 29th August 1915 and was killed in action, 21st March 1918, on the first day of the German Spring Offensive or Kaiserschlacht (“Kaiser’s Battle”) whilst the battalion was in the line near Noreuil, north-east of Bapaume, France.
