Family History

John Joseph Fritz Oldershaw was born in 1893 in Costock and was youngest son of John a farmer and Mary Elizabeth Oldershaw née Chapman , they lived at Glebe Farm in Costock. His father John was born in 1848 in East Leake his mother Mary Elizabeth Chapman was born in 1855 in Loughborough, they were married in Loughborough Registration district in 1880 and went on to have 4 children all born in Costock, Christine b1882, Albert William b 1883, George Harriman b1886 and John Joseph Fritz b1893. In the 1911 census the family are living in Costock and are shown as John 63 yrs a farmer, he is living with his wife Mary Elizabeth 56 yrs and their son John Joseph Fritz 17 yrs a student , also living with them , are their grandchildren Elsie Smeeton 4 yrs and Sidney Walter 3 yrs. John's probate proven in Nottingham on 6th March 1917 shows him as John Joseph Fritz Oldershaw of Costock near Loughborough, Nottinghamshire, Second Lieutenant in H M Army died 1st July 1916 in Belgium or France, his effects of £201 18 shillings and 10 pence were left to Albert William Oldershaw an agricultural organiser.

Military History

Second Lieutenant John Joseph Fritz Oldershaw, served with 9th Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he was gazetted Second Lieutenant 15th December 1914 and landed in France on 10th December 1915. He was killed in action on the first day of the battle of the Somme at Fricourt , 1st July 1916, he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme.
