Joseph was born in Castleford, Yorkshire and was the son of Joseph a stoker and Elizabeth Hadfield, his father Joseph senior was born in 1867 in Eckington, Derbyshire and his mother Elizabeth had been born in 1867 in Blaydon, Northamptonshire, they were married C1901 and had 4 children , Joseph b1894 Castleford , Ada b1892 Castleford, George b1895 Castleford and Elizabeth b1897 Eckington, Derbyshire. In 1911 census the family are living at 9 Hawthorn Cottages, Huthwaite and are shown as , Joseph 44 yrs a stoker, living with his wife Elizabeth 44 yrs and their children , Jospeh 17 yrs a labourer , Ada 19 yrs, George 16 yrs and Elizabeth 14 yrs.
Joseph enlisted in Sutton in Ashfield giving his place of birth as Castleford and his residence as Huthwaite. He served with the service number 116856 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment , he then transferred to the 9th battalion , Essex Regiment. He was killed in action on 18th September 1918 and was buried in grave reference II. F. 10, In Epehy Wood Farm Cemetery, Epehy, Somme, he was 25 yrs old.

HADFIELD, SUTTON Official notice has been received of the death in action of Private Joseph Hadfield, of the Essex Regiment (previously of the Sherwoods). Twenty-five years of age, he had been in the Army only 16 weeks, being one of the recently combed out miners from New Hucknall Colliery. He was the eldest son of Mr. And Mrs. Hadfield, of Chatsworth Street, Sutton, where the family recently removed to from Huthwaite. His death occurred on the 18th. September, and he was the older brother of Private Hadfield, who has just won the M.M. His service number follows Private 49639 John Henry Hallam, also listed on the same memorial, which suggests recruitment of friends or workmates.
