Albert Nixon

Pte Albert Nixon Worksop Guardian 11 May 1917 Another Worksop soldier to lose his life in the great cause is Pte Albert Nixon of the Lancashire Fusiliers, son of Mr and Mrs B Nixon of Newcastle Avenue, who also leaves a widow and child, residing at 91 Cheapside. Before the war, Pte Nixon worked at Manton where he was well liked by all who knew him. He was among the first lot of Worksop men to respond to the call, he enlisted on August 24th 1914. His Battalion took part in the Dardanelles Expedition and he was in the heavy fighting which attended the Sulva bay landing. He was wounded in the fight at Chocolate Hill and returned home on sick leave. On one occasion he was 48 hours in the fighting line. He had a narrow escape from death on August 18th, a Turkish bullet drilling its way clean through the butt of his rifle, leaving a clean round hole. Two days later he was struck by a shrapnel bullet in the middle of the back. He was thus well injured to fighting when, on his recovery from the wound, he was drafted out to France. His Regiment took a prominent part in the great offensive and Nixon was in the thick of the fighting. He was a good brave lad and never complained. In his last letter home he says he was going on alright but this week the news has been received that he died from wounds on April 17th. He was only 23 years of age, so that his life was a crowded one. He is one of the heroes of whom Worksop is justly proud. Much sympathy is expressed with his widow and child, and his parents. His brother. Leonard, is a Second-Corpl in the Royal Engineers.
