Born 1888 at Carlton he was known as Frank. He was the son of George and Mary Butcher and lived on Windmill Row, Carlton with his parents and siblings. He was the brother of Charles Butcher who also died in the Great War. On 1st June 1913 he married Ada Farrands at Carlton and they had one child, daughter Doris Ada born 16 Nov 1913. Ada was granted a pension of 15 shillings a week for her and her daughter following Franks death. Ada was living at 19 City Terrace, Carlton Hill but by 1919 had moved to 45, Mount Pleasant, Carlton. She had remarried in 1916 to John Askew.
He enlisted 18 August 1906 at Nottingham in the Kings Royal Rifles. Whilst with them he was based at Winchester and Colchester before he went to India, embarking 21 Dec 1909. He was there until 8 Nov 1912 being stationed at Chakrata United Provinces with the 4th battalion in 1911. His conduct was considered very good and he gained 2 Good Conduct badges during his time. In 1912 he transferred to the Reserves. In 1914 frank went to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force. He was wounded in action on 29 Oct 1914 with a bullet wound to his forearm necessitating a short spell in hospital. He was sent back to the Southern General Hospital in Bristol. He returned to France with the BEF and was initially reported missing on 15 May 1915 before he was confirmed as dead. Commemorated on the Le Touret memorial, France. His personal effects were sent to Mrs A Butcher, 19 City Terrace, Carlton Hill. He was eligible for the 1914 Star, British and Victory medals
