Sidney was born in Sheffield in 1887 his mother at the time of Sidney's death lived at 70 Victoria Street, Newark. We first come across Sidney in the 1891 census when he is 4 years of age living in the village of South Collingham with his grandparents William a brick layers labourer and his wife Harriet . Also at the address are the following children of William and Harriet, Fanny - Elizabeth - Bertha - Edith and Herbert. By the 1901 census when Sidney is 14 years of age he has left home and is a servant living with Harry Hallam and his family at Allcocks Cottage, Rufford, he is shown as a cattleman on farm. In 1906 he marries his wife Bertha Billyard and they subsequently have two children , a daughter Winifred born in 1908 and a son William born in 1911. In the 1911 census Sidney together with his wife Bertha and their two children are living in the village of West Markham with his wife's parents William and Rachel Billyard, he is 25 years of age and a farm labourer. 31
Private Sidney Holland enlisted into the army at Retford where he gave his place of birth as Sheffield and his residence as Tuxford. he served with the 12th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derbys regiment) His medal index card shows that he first entered a theatre of war in France on 24th September 1915. He was killed in action on 27th March 1918 . He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial
The family memorial (WMA27121) was moved in 1956 from the Mausoleum, West Markham (closed), to All Saints, West Markham, where it is outside, propped against the porch wall with several other memorials. Inscription: 'In loving memory of my dearly beloved husband, Private Sidney Holland, 12th Battalion Sherwood Foresters, killed in action March 27th 1918' Article published 1st May 1918 in the Newark Advertiser :- Son of Mrs Holland, 70 Victoria Street, Newark. A native of North Collingham and in the church choir. He joined the Sherwood Foresters in 1914 and was in training at Lichfield. At the time of his death had been in France two years and seven months.
