Military History

Pte J. Mallender Worksop Guardian 30 June 1916 Unofficially comes the news that another Worksop son has fallen in battle in the person of Pte J.H. Mallender 11th Battalion Sherwood Foresters, who had been in France for the comparative short space of six weeks. Pte Mallander was the eldest son of the late Mr James and Mrs Mallander of 39 King St, and the news is received in a letter to Mrs Keeling, Cheapside, her husband , Pte Keeling who was who was a comrade of Mallenders. As to where and how Mallender was killed no information given, but from the various dates of the letters it would seem that he fell on the 24th inst. A letter from her son was dated the 22nd reached Mrs Mallender on Tuesday Morning. The letter stated that he was quiet well and expected going into the trenches on the 24th. Pte Keeling’s letter is dated June 25th and thus it would appear that Mallender was killed on the day he entered the trenches. Pte Mallender was 25 years of age stood quite six foot high, He was a smashing fellow, well conducted, and well liked by all who knew him. Before the war he worked at Manton. He enlisted in January and was training at Sunderland and Plymouth. So far no official confirmation of the sad news has been received, and Mrs Mallender has the sympathy of the towns people in her great suspense.
