James Henry Ferguson was born Leeds, the only surviving child of Robert and Sarah Ferguson. His father was an iron moulder by trade, an occupation that James followed his father in, when he was of working age. By the time James was 4 years old, the family had moved to Headingley and 10 years later were living in Worksop at 100 Kilton Hill. James must have then took employment at the Manton Colliery prior to joining the army
James enlisted at Worksop and initially joined the Leicestershire regiment, number 58618. He was sent to France where he died of wounds and commemorated on the Thilloy Road Cemetery, Beaulencourt,
