John Robert Forth

John enlisted in Worksop and served with the 2/8th battalion, Sherwood Foresters in November 1914 when he was under 17 years of age. It was with his battalion that he went to Dublin during the Irish Rebellion and on 26th April 1916 while he and others were attacking along Northumberland Road towards Mount Street Bridge that he was wounded. He died the following day the 27th April 1916 as a result of these injuries and is buried in Grangegorman Military cemetery, Dublin He was one of 31 men of the Sherwood Foresters who were killed during the Irish Rebellion 1916.

Pte J R Forth Worksop Guardian 12 May 1916 We regret to hear that news has been received of the reported death in Ireland of Pte J R Forth, 2nd 8th Sherwood Foresters, son of Mrs Forth and brother of Mrs Dewsnap, Marecroft. A message was received that he was wounded in Dublin in April 27th, and since then a further message states that he was killed in action on May 2nd. His relatives are communicating with the War Office and a reply anxiously awaited Pte Forth enlisted in November 1914 and was then under 17 years of age. He was a smart, suave lad and looked older than his years. Pte J R Forth Worksop Guardian 19 May 1916 The report in our last issue that Pte J R Forth 2nd 8th Sherwood Foresters, son of Mrs Forth and brother of Mrs Dewsnap, Marecroft, had died as a result of wounds received in action at Dublin, has been confirmed. The gallant lad who was 19 years of age, enlisted in November 1914 and with his company, was drafted to Ireland with the outbreak of the rebellion. He took part in the fighting at Mount Street Bridge and as so far can be ascertained he was killed just before Lieut. Elliot was wounded. ** his young Lieut., Pte Forth was shot from behind. Lieut. Daffen had already fallen. Forth was a well conducted young fellow and he met his death most bravely. Lieut. Elliot speaks very highly of him and was much concerned when he learnt that he had fallen.
