John William Cave was born in 1896 in Basford and was the son of Dick a coal miner/hewer and Clara Cave née Lane. His father Dick was born in 1875 in Sutterton, Lincolnshire, his mother Clara Lane also born in 1875 in Basford, Nottingham, they were married in 1894 in Basford and had 8 children, sadly one died in infancy, their children were all born in Basford and were Samuel b1894, Clara b1898, Arthur Edward b1900, Elsie b1902, Lilian b1907 and Ernest Cave b1910 of 25 Athorpe Grove Vernon Avenue Old Basford Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 25 Athorpe Grove Vernon Avenue Old Basford Nottingham and are shown as Dick 36 yrs a coal miner he is living with his wife Clara 36 yrs and their children Samuel 16 yrs an apprentice joiner at an undertakers, John William 14 yrs a hosiery sorter, Clara 13 yrs a scholar, Elsie 9 yrs a scholar, Lillian 4yrs, Ernest 9 months, also living with them is Ernest Lane 25 yrs (b1886) a post office clerk.
Private John William Cave, enlisted on 1st December 1915 in Nottingham, he gave his age as 19 yrs and three months, his address was 25 Athorpe Grove Vernon Avenue Old Basford Nottingham, he was a hosiery factory hand. He served with the 2/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire )Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles). He landed in France on 3rd May 1917 and within a month he died of wounds on 1st June 1917. He is buried in Fins New British Cemetery, Sorel-le- Grand, Grave Reference: V G 1
In memoriam published 1st June 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “CAVE. – In loving memory of our dear son, Pte. J. W. Cave, Sherwoods, died of wounds June 1st, 1917. Ever in our thoughts. – Mother, father, brothers, and sisters, Sam (prisoner of war), [1] Arthur (serving).” 1] Pte. Samuel Cave, Headquarters Company, 7th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, was taken prisoner on 22nd March 1918. Born in Basford he was the husband of Mrs. E. A.
