Ernest Cecil Cave was born in 1896 in Gorton Manchester and was the son of Thomas George Mundy Cave a carriage and wagon inspector and Minnie Eliza Cave née Roberts of 14,Haddon St, Sherwood, Nottingham. Both his father Thomas George Mundy Cave and his mother Minnie Elizabeth Roberts were born in Bridgewater, Somerset, his father in 1872 and his mother in 1874, they were married in 1892 in Bridgewater and went on to have 4 children, Percival George b1894 Bridgewater, Ernest Cecil b1897 Gorton, Leonard Arthur b1900 Nottingham and Thomas William b1905 Manchester. In the 1911 census the family are living at 152 Haydn Road, Sherwood, Nottingham and are shown as Thomas George 39 yrs he is living with his wife Minnie Eliza 37 yrs and their children Percival George 17 yrs a railway clerk, Ernest Cecil 14 yrs a scholar, Leonard Arthur 11 yrs a scholar and Thomas William 6 yrs a scholar.
Lance Corporal Ernest Cecil Cave, enlisted at Nottingham and initially served with the service number 37395 in the North Staffordshire Regiment. He later transferred with service number 29558 into the King's Own Scottish Borderers. Finally whilst serving with 12th Battalion Highland Light Infantry, he died of wounds on 20th April 1917. He is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, grave reference 19.E.12.
In memoriam published 19th April 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “CAVE. – In loving memory of L-Corpl. E. C. Cave, 12th H.L.I., who died of wounds in France, April 20th, 1917.
