Family History

Fred Curley was born in Anston, Yorkshire in 1887, one of 7 children to Richard and Mary Curley. The following year, the family moved to Worksop into Newgate Street where they resided for many years. In 1902, Fred took employment as a grate maker after serving an apprenticeship as a moulder. The Curley’s also adopted a daughter, Lizzie Pointer from Woodend, near Worksop to increase their children. The head of the family, Richard, died age 46 in 1902. At some time after 1911, Mary Curley moved to Hamilton Street, in Worksop.

Military History

Fred enlisted in his Regiment in Worksop in the early days of the war. He left for France on the 29th July 1915. Although details are not to hand, Fred was awarded a Military Medal. His medal card shows that his regimental number was changed no less than 3 times, 11284, 20088 and finally 203182.
