Bernard Sanderson was born in 1898 he was the son of Alfred a cotton factory worker and Hannah Sanderson née Hardwick of 11 Pleasley Vale, Derbyshire. both Alfred Sanderson and his wife Hannah Hardwick were born in 1869 at Pleasley Vale, they were married in 1892 at Mansfield, they went on to have 4 children. In 1911 the family were living at 11 Pleasley Vale, Alfred 42 yrs is a cotton factory worker, he is living with his wife 42 yrs and their 4 children, including Edgar 17 yrs a cotton factory worker and Bernard 13 yrs a scholar.
Lance Corporal Bernard Sanderson enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 15th bn Sherwood Foresters (known as the Bantams as the men were under 5ft 3inches tall) he was reported missing later confirmed as killed in action between 22nd and 28th March 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Pozierers Memorial, France.
War Diary entry for 24/03/1918: Noon; ordered to counter-attack. Moved forward and held the advancing enemy with the 15th Cheshires on the right. There was no touch with any troops on the left. The enemy went round this way, attacking the two companies, who had very few survivors, at 9pm ordered to withdraw to fresh position on the Curlu-Maurepas. Bernard's brother, Edgar, died of wounds on14/08/1917 whilst serving with the York and Lancaster Regiment.
