John Thomas Newbold was born in 1890 at Newark and was the son of Thomas and Eliza Newbold née Hollis of 178 Northgate Newark. His father Thomas was born in 1856 at Breedon, Leicestershire and his mother Eliza Hollis was born in 1857 at Newark, they were married in 1879 at Nottingham and went on to have 10 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children all born at Newark were, George b1880, Arthur b1883, William b1886, Walter b1888, John Thomas b1890, Ernest b1892, Charles b1893 and Herbert b1895. In the 1911 census the family are living at 178 Northgate, Newark and are shown as Thomas 55 yrs a stationary engine driver, he is living with his wife Eliza 54 yrs and their children, Arthur 28 yrs an engine driller, Walter 23 yrs a cutter out, John Thomas 21 yrs a brewers labourer, Ernest 19 yrs a moulder, Charles 18 yrs a blacksmiths labourer and Herbert 16 yrs a rope maker.
Private John Thomas Newbold attested on 7th December 1915 at Newark, he gave his age as 25 yrs and 352 days, his address as 178 Northgate, Newark, his occupation as that of a machine moulder and his next of kin was his father Thomas of the same address. He was posted to the reserves the following day. He was mobilised for war on 11th May 1917 and posted to the 3rd battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He embarked from Folkstone on 3rd March 1918 landing in France the same day and was posted to the 4th battalion North Staffordshire Regiment on 4th March 1918.He was killed in action on 15th April 1918 and is buried at Hedauville Communal Cemetery Extension, Pas de Calais, France. Article published on 4th May 1918 in the Newark Herald :- Seventh son of Mr & Mrs T. Newbold, 178 Northgate, Newark. Born in Newark and educated at Lovers’ Lane Council school. He was for some time employed at Messrs. Warwick & Richardsons and latterly with Messrs. A. Ransome & Co., Stanley works. Being with them until his enlistment about six months ago, when he entered the Lincolnshire Regiment. Went out to France on Good Friday and transferred to the North Staffs. Was of quiet disposition, very steady and much respected. A brother, Pte William Newbold, is in a Labour Battalion. Pte Herbert Newbold, Sherwood Foresters, has been invalided home from France. The third brother, Walter, has been twice rejected.
