Family History

James was born in 1895 in Babworth, Retford and was the son of James Arthur , a road repairer working for Nottinghamshire County Council and Miriam Nicholson (nee Shaw ) of 18, Ranby,Retford, James and Miriam had 5 children but one sadly died in infancy. We come across the family in the 1901 census living at 42 Cheapside , Worksop James (senior) at this time is a general labourer on a farm and his son James is 6 years of age , also living with them is their daughter Nellie who had been born in 1894 . By 1911 the family are living at Ranby Bridge Retford, and now consist of James and Miriam and their four children Nellie born 1894 James born 1895 Fanny born 1802 and Doris born 1910 He was employed by Colonel G Savile Foljambe, C.B. on the Osberton estate

Military History

James enlisted in Retford in January 1915 and gave his place of birth as Babworth, he served with 'B' battery , 123rd Brigade , Royal Field Artillery as a gunner. His medal index card shows that he first entered a theatre of war in France on 26th September 1915. He was wounded by shrapnel in the arm and died as a result of these wounds on 11th September 1918 at no2 New Zealand Field Ambulance in France. He is buried in Lebucquiere Communal Cemetery Extension, Pas De Calais , France, grave reference 3.C.1

Bombardier James Nicholson Retford Times 11th Oct 1918 Bombardier James Nicholson, R.F.A. son of Mr and Mrs Nicholson, Ranby, died of wounds on September 11th in France. He joined up at Retford in January 1915 and went to France the following September. He was last year, wounded by shrapnel in the arm. He was employed by Colonel G Savile Foljambe, C.B. on the Osberton estate and was 23 years of age. Mr and Mrs Nicholson have the deepest sympathy of many friends in their bereavement.
