Family History

Walter was born in 1888 at Metheringham the son of Eward a foreman plate layer for the Great northern Railway and his wife Maria, he had two siblings. In the 1911 census he is living with his parents at Marsh Lane Crossing in Saundby,he is 23 years of age ,single and a ship yard riveter.

Military History

Walter Herbert Yates enlisted as Gainsborough and gave his place of residence as Sturton le Steeple he served with the Lincolnshire Regiment, 6th Battalion who were fighting in the Gallipoli Campaign in Turkey. He was eventually promoted to lance sergeant. The battalion were ordered to attack (uphill), against some strongly entrenched Turkish positions. The British troops were forced to retreat, and out of five hundred and seventy eight soldiers at the start of the battle, there were over four hundred casualties, one of whom was Lance Sergeant Yates. His name is commemorated on the Helles memorial,Turkey.
