Benjamin Wenn

Benjamin (b. 1893/1894), was the third son of Walter Leonard and Eliza (also 'Thirza') Wenn who in 1901 were living at 5 Trafalgar Terrace, Trafalgar Street, Radford, with their four sons, Herbert Leonard (10), Jebaz Lewin (9), Benjamin (7) and Robert Frederick (5). The family was at the same address ten years later by which time Walter and Eliza had been married for 21 years and had had six children, all of whom survived. All six sons were in the household at the time of the 1911 census: Herbert (20), Jabez (19), Benjamin (17), Robert Frederick (15), William Samuel (9) and Povey (8). At the time of Benjamin's death he was engaged to be married. At least one other of Walter and Eliza's sons served during the war; Robert Frederick Wenn (b. 1895), who served as 6540 Gunner Wenn, Royal Garrison Artillery. Robert, a warehouseman for a draper's, enlisted in 1915 at the age of 20 (service reckoned from 1 November). Robert was gassed and required hospital treatment 14-20 July 1917. He had a period of leave in the UK, 1-10 October 1917, but on his return to France suffered a gun shot wound to his hand on 27 April 1918 which resulted in him being invalided to England on 3 May 1918. He was demobilised on 24 January 1919 to 13 Addinton Road, which was also recorded as the address of his father who was his nominated next of kin.
