Elijah Meakin was born in 1895 in Langwith, Derbyshire the son of John a miner and Elizabeth Ann Meakin (née Lineker) of 275 Ilkeston, Road, Radford, Nottingham. His parents were born in 1861, John at Codnor, Derbyshire, Elizabeth Ann at Nottingham. Married in 1881, they had seven children, six surviving infancy - William b.1883 Nottingham, Frank b.1886 Nottingham, Jane Lydia b.1889, Robert b.1890 Nottingham, Clara b.1892 Nottingham and Elijah b.1895 in Langwith. In 1911, the family lived at 275 Ilkeston Road, Radford. Following their son’s death, Elijah’s parents lived at 17 Moorgate Street, Radford, Nottingham.
Elijah Meakin enlisted on 31st August 1914 at Nottingham. He was posted to the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters and landed in France on 4th January 1915. On 19th May 1916 he was wounded in action by multiple gun shot wounds to both legs and left arm and admitted to 69 Field Ambulance. He was transferred to the 22nd casualty clearing station and by 22nd May 1916 was dangerously ill and admitted to no 2 stationary hospital in Abbeville. He died of his wounds on 31st May 1916. He is buried in Abbeville Communal Cemetery, Somme, France Grave Reference: III.J.11
