William Needham married his wife Agnes Hubbard (born 7th April 1878 ) in 1898 their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow registration area. They lived at 26 Connaught Street, Nottingham and had the following children, Gertrude born 11th June 1905, Bertha born 8th May 1911, Walter born 7th April 1913, Albert Edward born 8th February 1915 and William Thomas born 22nd May 1917. In the 1911 census the family are living at 77 Knights Row, Bllomsgrove Street, Radford and are shown as William a coal miner stall man, he is living with his wife Agnes and children Edith 10 yrs a scholar and Gertrude 5 yrs of age. Following his death his widow Agnes was awarded a pension of 21 shillings and 3 pence which commenced on 25th February 1918.
Private William Needham enlisted at Nottingham on 9th September 1914, he gave his age as 38 yrs and his home address as 77 Knights Row, Radford, Nottingham he served with the service number 2464 in the 7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and was discharged from the battalion on 23rd February 1915 under King's Regulations 392 (16) at his own request . He re enlisted and served as a driver in the 2/1 st Notts Battery, Royal Horse Artillery, he died of heatstroke in Basra on 12th August 1917 and was buried in Basra War Cemetery grave reference IV B 13
