Herbert John Baguley

Herbert Baguley enlisted in September 1915 and served initially in the Sherwood Foresters. He served in France from May 1916 and was killed or died of wounds on 23 November 1917. However, his body was not recovered until 5 December 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France (Panel 5).

CWGC: Herbert JAMES Baguley. Also known as Baggaley Mansfield Reporter, 25 January 1918: ‘Mansfield Soldier’s Death in France. Private HJ Baguley. Official information has been received by Mr H Baguley of No. 11, Herbert-street, Mansfield, that their son, Pte HJ Baguley (29684), 13th Yorks Regiment, was killed in action or died of wounds on or about November 23rd. Mr Baguley received the sad news that their son was wounded and missing six weeks ago, and hopes were entertained that he had been taken prisoner, but official information that his body was recovered on Dec. 5th, put an end to any such hopes. Before enlistment, the deceased soldier was employed at Messrs Sanderson and Robinson’s foundry, and answered the country’s call in September 1915, after training at Derby and Woking, in the 18th Sherwood Foresters he was transferred to the 13th Yorks, and went to France in May 1916. The deceased soldier had been expected on leave for many weeks, and the sad news came as a great shock to his relatives and many friends who have shown much sympathy.
