Francis William Evans

Francis William was the son of Thomas and Charlotte Evans (née Hurt). His father Thomas was born in Mansfield in 1870, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Evans. His mother Charlotte Hurt was born in Eakring, Nottinghamshire, in 1867. They were married at Mansfield Register Office in 1890 and had nine children who were born in Mansfield between 1891 and 1909. All but the youngest three were baptised at Mansfield SS Peter and Paul. Seven children survived infancy: Thomas, Annie, Francis b. 1894 bap. 1 July 1894, Elizabeth, Minnie, Alfred and John Joseph. The two siblings who died young were Harry b. 1895 (O/N/D) bap. 4 December 1895 d. 1896 (J/A/S) and May b. 1899 (reg. J/F/M) bap. 14 August 1899 d. 1900 (O/N/D). In 1891 Thomas, a stone quarry labourer, and Charlotte were living in Mason's Court, Pelham Street, Mansfield, with their first child Thomas (under 1 year). They were living in Mason's Square, Newgate Lane, by 1892 and still at the same address in 1901 along with their four surviving children Thomas, Annie (8), Francis (6) and Elizabeth (3); two other children had died in infancy. Thomas was now working as a bricklayers' labourer. The family was living at 27 Pembroke Street, Mansfield, in 1911. All seven surviving children were in the home on the night of the census: Thomas a clerk (colliery), Annie a cotton doubler, Francis a foundry labourer, Elizabeth 'cotton dobbing', Minnie (8), Alfred (6) and Joseph (2). Francis' mother Charlotte died on 8 June 1920; she was still living on Pembroke Street, Mansfield.
