He was one of eight children born to iron moulder John and Hannah (née Johnson) Sipson. of 34 Union Street, Mansfield. In 1911 the family were living at 34 Union Street, Mansfield, John Ellis 61 yrs is a widow and an iron moulder, he is living with his daughter Annie 29 yrs a cotton winder and Charles 27 yrs a tram conductor. Charles married 24 year-old Margaret Elsie Pearson (born 8th July 1889 ) at St. Barnabas’ Church, Pleasley Hill on 8th August 1913 their daughter Constance was born on 5th February 1914 followed by a second daughter, Margaret Kathleen born 2nd April 1915, while the family were living at 7, Portland Street, Pleasley Hill. Commencing 22nd November 1915 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence a week.
Private Charles Sipson enlisted at Mansfield on 7th September 1914, aged 31 years and 37 days. He served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment landing in France on 18th March 1915. He was killed in action on 9th May 1915 and is buried at Y Farm Military Cemetery Grave Reference: E 31.
