John Henry Blackmore was born in 1884 at Grimsby, Lincolnshire with parents John Henry Blackmore and Mary Jane Smith. Shortly after John Henry Junior was born, his father died and his mother soon married John Mawer who died 1895 then married Tom Pratten 1900. Tom Pratten was a railway platelayer and it was probably him who helped or inspired John Henry to start his working life as a railway carriage washer in 1901. In 1901 he married in Grimsby to an Irish girl, Elizabeth Hotson in 1903, followed by a daughter, Mary Elizabeth, in 1906. 5 years later, the three of them had moved to Worksop where they took up residence at 23 Grafton Street and John Henry was working as a railway Carriage & Wagon examiner. At some stage soon after he must have taken up work at Manton colliery, being as he is named on their memorial. His widowed wife married James Allison at Worksop in 1921.
He enlisted in Worksop, was killed in action and commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium
