Ernest Charles Vickers was born in 1894 at Southwell and was the son of Wistow a coal merchant and Rachel Vickers née Scarliffe of Westgate House Southwell. His father Wistow was born in 1865 at Elston and his mother Rachel Scarliffe was born in 1871 at Newark, they were married in 1894 their marriage was recorded n the Glanford Brigg, Lincolnshire Registration District, they had three children, Ernest Charles b1894, Dorothy Gertrude b1897 and Elsie Mary b1905, all were born in Southwell.In the 1911 census the family were livi ng at Westgate House, Southwell are were shown as Wistow Vickers 46 yrs a coal merchant, he is living with his wife Rachel 40 yrs and their children, Ernest Charles 16 yrs a bank clerk, Dorothy Gertrude 14 yrs a scholar and Elsie Mary 6 yrs.
Second Lieutenant Ernest Charles Vickers initially enlisted into the 29th battalion Royal Fusiliers, with the service number PS/9350, he landed in France on 22nd December 1916, he was commission as Second Lieutenant on 25th October 1916 into the 7th battalion Essex Regiment. He was killed in action on 26th January 1917 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
His parents installed a single light window in Holy Trinity church, Westgate, Southwell, in memory of their son: 'To the Glory of God and the loving memory of Ernest Charles Vickers, 2nd Lieut 7th Batt. Essex Regt. Killed in action in France 26th January 1917 aged 22 years, this window is dedicated by his sorrowing parents. Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends.’
