Family History

Walter Herbert Bycroft was born in 1885 at Market Rasen, Lincolnshire and was the son of John a rabbit catcher and the late Rebecca Bycroft née Bordman of Blidworth.His father John was born in 1844 at Market Rasen and his mother Rebecca Bordman was born in 1844 also at Market Rasen, she died in 1888 aged 44 yrs, they were married on 16th February 1869 at North Willingham, Lincolnshire, they went on to have the following children, Demaries b1872, Olive b1873, Eva b1875, Rosaine b1877, Emma b1879, Henry b1880, William b1882 and Walter b1885 all were born at either Market Rasen or North Wilingham, Lincolnshire. In the 1911 census Walter has left the family home he is living in barracks at India and is shown as being 25 yrs of age and is a private soldier in the 1st battalion King's Own Scottish Borders.In the same 1911 census his father is living at Blidworth he is shown as being 67 yrs of age a widow and a rabbit catcher, he is living on his own at the address

Military History

Private Walter Herbert Bycroft enlisted at Mansfield prior to 1911 and served with the 2nd battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers he was taken a prisoner of war at Mons and died of wounds on 11th October 1914. He is buried at Hautrage Military Cemetery, Hainaut, Belgium.
