Bernard Harry Stringfellow was born in 1882 in Southwell, Notts. His parents were William and Elizabeth Stringfellow. Out of 11 children that his mother bore, only 7 survived as siblings to Bernard. The head of the household, William had a long career in the police force and by 1901 was a police sergeant living at the police station on Potter Street, Worksop, and 10 years later had retired with a job of porter to the Worksop and Retford brewery supplementing his police pension. About this time, in 1910, Bernard married Ada Webster in Worksop and set up home at 17 Vicars Walk, Worksop, working as a miner. In the short time they had together, they had 3 children, Leonard Harvey, 1912, Gertrued Annie, 1913 and Bernard St Julian, 1915.
Pte. B. H. Stringfellow Worksop Guardian 17 August 1917 Mrs. Stringfellow, of 77, Potter Street, Worksop, has now received official confirmation of the death of her husband, Pte. Bernard, Harry, Stringfellow, of the 3rd Battalion Coldstream Guards. The news is conveyed in a letter from the Record Office of the Coldsfream Guards at Buckingham Gate, S.W.., which states that no further news has been received. Relatives to Pte. Stringfellow, who has been missing since October 21st, 1914, and the Army Council are regretfully constrained to conclude that he is dead, and that the death occurred on that day. The letter also expressed the sympathy of the Army Council with Mrs. Stringfellow in her loss.
