Military History

Lce-Corpl Leonard A Benn Worksop Guardian 1 November 1918 Last week we reported that news had been received that Lce-Corpl Leonard Arthur Benn, M.M., Royal Fusiliers (Sportsman Batt.), husband of Mrs Benn, 112 Potter Street, and eldest son of Mr and Mrs Benn, the Baulk, Worksop, was lying dangerously wounded in the 3rd Australian Hospital at Abberville, France. The hope that he would not recover was never realised, as he succumbed to his wounds on Oct 29th. Corpl Benn was a gallant soldier and a member of a family which is strongly respected in HM’s Forces, his father and brothers all serving. One of the latter has been missing for some time. Before the war, Lce-Corpl Benn worked at Shireoaks Colliery. He was a smart, steady, industrious young man, as a soldier he won the confidence of his officer and the respect and good will of his comrades. He was awarded the Military Medal for his bravery in rescuing a wounded comrade under fire. Benn had been previously wounded, the last time in April, and had not been many weeks back in the firing line when he received the injuries deemed to be mortal. The deceased soldier leaves two little boys, with whom his widow and other relatives, great sympathy is expressed

Extra Information

His younger brother, Fred Benn was also a casualty of the war and was killed in March 1918. Research by Colin Dannatt
