Albert Percy Walker was born in 1896 at Coddington and was the son of the late Albert Walker and Mary Elizabeth Walker née Adams of Balderton His father Albert was born in 1865 he died in 1895 and his mother Mary Elizabeth Adams was born in 1871 at Coddington, they were married in 1892 at Nottingham and went on to have two children, Alice b1893 and Albert Percy b1895. His mother Mary Elizabeth was remarried in 1902 to Charles Frederick Fotherby , their marriage was recorded in the Newark Registration District, Charles brough two children to the marriage, Lillian May Fotherby and Charles Alfred Fothersby , they went on to live at 44, Smith St., New Balderton, Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at Winthorpe near Newark and are shown as Charles Frederick Fotherby 35 yrs a horseman on a farm, he is living with his wife Mary Elizabeth Fotherby and his two children, Lillian May 8 yrs (born North Muskham) and Charles Alfred Fothersby (also born North Muskham) and also Albert Percy Walker 15 yrs single, stepson a garden boy.
Private Albert Percy Walker enlisted at Derby on 4th September 1914 he gave his age as 19 yrs and 10 months, he was a labourer. He was posted to the 13th Hussars and joined them at Scarborough on 5th September 1914, he was transferred on 2nd June 1915 to the 3rd battalion Suffolk Regiment and landed in France on 29th June 1915. He served on the Western Front until he was wounded, a gun shot wound to his chest at Vermelles, France and returned to England on 3rd November 1915. He was discharged from the Army on 22nd January 1916 being no longer fit for war service, he was awarded a silver badge number 159782. He died on 15th May 1919 of double pneumonia at the Star and Garter Hospital at Richmond. He is buried at Balderton (St. Giles) Churchyard, Nottinghamshire.
Article published 28th May 1919 in the Newark Advertiser :- Eldest son of Mrs Mary Elizabeth Fotherby, 44 Smith Street, New Balderton and the late Mr Albert Walker of Nottingham. Joined Kitchener’s army in Sept. 1914 and drafted to France with the 20th Hussars in July 1915. Shortly afterwards transferred to the 1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Wounded in the chest and spine and was bed-ridden for three-and-half-years. Early in May 1919 contracted double pneumonia and died at the Star and Garter Hospital, Richmond.
