Robert Sanders was born in 1882 at Balderton and was the son of Everitt King Sanders a labourer and the late Sarah Sanders née Fell 11 The Avenue, Balderton, Newark. His father Everitt King Sanders was born in 1855 at Gelston, Lincolnshire he died on 3rd October 1915 and his mother Sarah Fell was born in in 1859 at Lambley she died in 1907, they were married on 20th May 1879 at Newark, they went on to have the following children, Alice b1880 Brandon, Lincs, Robert b1882 Balderton, John b1885 Balderton, Everitt b1891 (died 1892) Balderton, Elizabeth b1895 Balderton and Harriett b1899 Balderton. In the 1911 census the family are living at 60 Grove Street, Balderton and are shown as Everitt Sanders 56 yrs he is living with his second wife Elizabeth (1862 Sheffield) 49 yrs and his children Robert 29 yrs a quarryman, John 26 yrs a labourer and Elizabeth Jane 16 yrs a plaster refiner.
Private Robert Sanders enlisted on 22nd September 1902 at Newark, he enlisted for 3 years service with the colours and 9 yrs with the reserves, he gave his age as 20 yrs and a labourer, he was living at Church Street, Balderton with his next of kin his father Everitt he gave his religion as that of a Wesleyan. He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he saw service in Hong Kong and returned to England where he was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised for war on 5th August 1914 and landed in France on 2nd October 1914 he was killed in action on 11th March 1915 in the attack at Neuve Chapelle, France, whilst serving with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. He had served for 12 yrs and 171 days.
Article published 7th April 1915 in the Newark Advertiser :- “Son of Mr Everitt Sanders of 11, Ward’s Row, Newark and formerly of Balderton. Joined the 1st Sherwood Foresters over 12 years ago. He had seen a great deal of service abroad, including Singapore and Hong Kong, leaving the Regiment at the latter place. He was called up at the outbreak of war a month before he would have completed his nine years on the reserve. Drafted to the front on his birthday, November 5th. Well known at Balderton and Newark, especially at Messrs. Cafferata’s plaster works, where he answered to the sobriquet of “Nocker” and he was an active member of Balderton Working Men’s Club. Killed in action.
