Richard Pearson Elson was born in 1898 at Balderton, in the 1901 census he is shown as being the grandson of William Elson a plater pit worker, night watchman and his wife Elizabeth Elson living at 22 Woodbine Terrace, Balderton, he is 3 yrs of age In the 1911 census he is living at 4 West End Terrace Balderton Newark Nottinghamshire, he is shown as being 13 years a mill boy at plaster pits and a boarder living with William Elston 60 yrs a night watchman and his wife Elizabeth 54 yrs and their family. His pension record card shows his next of kin as his mother Elizabeth Elson of 4 West End Terrace, Balderton, Newark
Private Richard Pearson Elson enlisted at Newark whilst residing at Balderton on 5th April 1918, he served with the 7th battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He landed in France on 17th August 1918 and was killed in action on 8th October 1918. He is buried at Bois-des-Angles British Cemetery, Crevecoeur-sur-L'Escaut, France grave reference 1.A.1
CWGC give the following details - Son of Mrs. Elizabeth Elson, of 4, West End Terrace, Balderton, Newark. Article published 2nd November 1918 in the Newark Herald :- Son of Mrs Elizabeth Elson, 4 West End Terrace, Old Balderton. Would have been 21 years of age in December 1918. Prior to enlistment was an apprentice at Messrs. Simpsons. Also a Staff Sergeant in the Boys Brigade. Joined the Leicester's on April 5th, 1918 and drafted to France on August 17th.
