Archibald George Stanley was born in 1898 at Southwell and was the only son of Herbert a house painter and Mary Stanley, née Milner of Halam Road, Southwell. His father Herbert was born in 1856 at Southwell and his mother Mary Ann Milner was born in 1860 at Kirklington, they were married in 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration District. In the 1911 census the family are living at Halam Road, Southwell and are shown as Herbert 55yrs a house painter, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 51 yrs and their son Archibald George 13 yrs a scholar.
Private Archibald George Stanley attested on 6th June 1916 at Southwell, he gave his age as 18 yrs and 4 months his address as Queen Street, Southwell, his occupation as that of a house painter and his next of kin as Herbert his father of the same address. He was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised for war on 4th October 1917 and posted to the Training Battalion. On 4th December 1917 he was posted to the Durham Light Infantry and on 5th May 1918 landed in France. He was killed in action on 28th October 1918 and is buried in Esquelmes Churchyard, Hainaut, Belgium (grave ref. A.4).
