George Hemlsey was born in 1897 at Nottingham the son of Samuel a coal miner hewer and Annie Hemsley née Buckler of 10, Maitland Rd., Woodthorpe Drive, Mapperley, Nottingham. Samuel Hemsley was born in 1876 at Pilsley, Annie Buckler was born in 1876 at Nottingham, married in 1896 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district. they had 5 children In the 1911 census the family were living at 65 Wood Street, Holmewood, Chesterfield, Samuel is 55 yrs a coal miner hewer and George 14 yrs is a coal miner loader.

Military History

Private George Hemsley enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Mapperley. He landed in France on 17th August 1915 and was killed in action, 2nd March 1917, aged 20, whilst serving in the line near Mazingarbe, France. Buried: Vermelles British Cemetery, France. Plot 5. Row B. Grave 43.
