Joseph Marsden was the son of William and Bessy Marsden, of Westgate, Tickhill, Rotherham, and a native of Carlton, Nottinghamshire. In the 1891 census the family were living in Carlton, on Low street, near the Grey Horses and in 1901 was living at Gateford Bar, Worksop. By 1911 he was working as a railway shunter, living at 10 Cresswel St, Worksop, and had been married 1 year to Rose Laughton aged 21. He initially joined the Notts & Derby Regiment No. 13318 before transferring to the Lancashire Fusiliers.
Private Joseph Marsden, served with the 2/7th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, formerly of the Sherwood Foresters, he died of wounds on 4th March 1918. He is buried in Tincourt New British Cemetery.
Worksop Guardian 15 March 1918 “Another Carlton soldier has made the great sacrifice in Pte. Joseph Marsden, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marsden, South Carlton. He joined the Lancashire Fusiliers, and took part in the Dardanelles Expedition. Since then he has been in France, and it was whilst fighting gallantly for his country that the end came last week. Previously to enlistment the deceased worked at Shireoaks Colliery. His brother George, it will be remembered, was a prisoner of war in Germany and was repatriated after undergoing great hardship.
