Alfred Leonard French

Alfred Leonard French (known to his family as 'Leonard') was born in 1884 at Sutton Bonnington and baptised on 4th August 1884 at St. Michael's Church, Sutton Bonington. was the only son of Alfred and Elizabeth Ann French née Dexter of Sutton Bonington, his parents were married 25th June 1883 at St. Michael's Church. Sutton Bonington. Leonard would never have known his father who died a few months before he was born. Leonard's mother Lizzie was remarried on 7th June 1890 at St. Michael's Church to Thomas Vickerstaff, a shepherd, and had three more children John, Millicent and Thomas, half-siblings to Leonard. The Vickerstaff family lived in Main Street, Sutton Bonington, near Leonard's grandfather Thomas Dexter, the local blacksmith, and his grandmother Lucy. Alfred married his wife Edith Shaw (born 11th April 1885 at Windsor) in 1910 their marriage was recorded in the Loughborough registration district, they lived at Main Street, Sutton Bonnington she later resided at 18 Bedford St, Loughborough, Leicestershire. They had a son William Alfred born on 7th November 1911, following his death his widow Edith was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence which commenced on 25th November 1918.
