Family History

Alfred Arnold Neale was born on 19th October 1892 at Colwick and was baptised on 17th December 1892 at Holy Trinity Church at Gainsborough and was the son of Thomas Neale a metal planer and Gertrude Neale née Lawson of 84 Evelyn Road, Crookes, Sheffield. His father was born in 1867 in Gedling and his mother Gertrude Lawson was born in 1871 at Gainsborough, they were married on 6th July 1891 at Gainsborough they went on to have 13 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their children were George William b1891, Alfred Arnold b1892, Dorothy b1894 Evelyn Edith b1896 Beatrice b1898, Gertrude b1899, Violet b1903, Robert b1907, Mary b1909, Ethel b1910 and Thomas b1913, In the 1911 census the family are living t 84 Evelyn Road, Crookes, Sheffield and are shown as Tom 44 yrs a metal planer, he is living with his wife Gertrude 40 yrs and their children, Dorothy 17 yrs, Beatrice 13 yrs, Gertrude 12 yrs, Violet 8 yrs, Robert 4 yrs, Mary 2 yrs and Ethel 9 months. In the same 1911 census we find that Alfred Arnold has left the family home and is residing with his grandparents, William Lawson 67 yrs and Sarah Lawson 65 yrs at 57 Gordon Street, Gainsborough, he is shown as being 18 yrs, single and a railway porter.

Military History

Private Alfred Arnold Neale enlisted at Gainsborough whilst residing at Sheffield, he served with the 5th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He landed in France on 1st March 1915 and died of his wounds on 18th August 1916. He is buried at Warlincourt Halte British Cemetery grave reference 2.F.11
