Arthur was born 1892 at Carlton, the son of Isaac and Betsy Buckley. Isaac and Betsy had 15 children of whom 12 survived. His father was a railway worker and in 1901 Arthur, his parents and 8 siblings were living on Main Street West, in Carlton. By 1911 Arthur was living away from home at Assarts Farm in Nuthall where he worked as a horseman. His parents and several siblings were living at Elindale, Chandos Street, Netherfield. His father died in 1914 and by the time of Arthur's death his mother was living at Highclere Drive, Burton Road, Carlton where she received his personal effects, some photographs and a cigarette case. Arthur enlisted 10 Dec 1915 at Carlton in the Reserves mobilising on 17 Nov 1916. Initially he was with the 5th Reserves then from 2 May 1917 with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters serving at home. On 3rd May 1917 he shipped out from Folkestone to Boulogne, eventually arriving at Calais on 4th May. He was posted to the 2/7th battalion C Company on 29th May, joining them in the field. On 30 August 1917 he was appointed unpaid Lance Corporal in the field. Sadly on 27 September 1917 Arthur received a gunshot wound to the abdomen and died of his wounds two days later. He was buried at Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium. He was eligible for the British and Victory medals
