Family History

Known as Harry he was born 1896 at Elford in Staffordshire. He was the son of Walter and Emily Benson, one of five children. By 1911 Walter, Emily and a t least two of their sons, Harry included, had moved to Carlton and were living at 25 Mar Hill Road, Carlton. Walter was a domestic Gardener and Harry was a packer at a Furniture Works, possibly Lawrences in Colwick which may explain why he appears on both Colwick and Carlton war memorials

Military History

Enlisted at Nottingham he went to France on 6 July 1915 and was killed in action on 30 Sept 1915. According to the Soldiers Died in the Great War publication he was formerly 15202, of the Hussars Regiment. Buried in the Perth Cemetery (China Wall) cemetery in Belgium. e was eligible for the British, Victory medals and the 1915 Star.
