Family History

He was the son of Charles and Mary Goodwin who in 1901 were living at 3 St Matthias Road, Nottingham, with their son who was two years old. Charles senior, aged 29 had been born in Cropwell Butler on 6 October 1871, and Mary, aged 25, in Langar. Also living in the household was Mary's sister, Martha Clarke, a dressmaker. Charles senior died on 29 November 1901 and was buried in Goole Cemetery, East Yorkshire. In 1911 Mary (35), was married to William Howarth (36), a farm bailiff, and they and Mary's son, Charles (12), lived at 22 Victoria Road, Sandiacre. William and Mary had been married for four years. Mary's place of birth was given on this census as Barnstone.

Military History

Transf. to (TR/38550) 10th Bn Training Reserve. He died in Cannock Chase Military Hospital and was buried in Langar (St Andrew) Churchyard.

Extra Information

Charles' mother, Mary, was born in Langar, which is probably why Charles was buried in St Andrew's churchyard. Inscription on gravestone: 'In loving memory of Pte Charles Goodwin, 10th T.T. Batt, who passed away at Cannock Chase Military Hospital, March 26th 1917, aged 18 years.' He is commemorated on the Sandiacre parish memorial, St Giles Church, Sandiacre. The inscription on the gravestone of Charles' father in Goole reads, 'In loving memory of Charles Goodwin of Cropwell Butler, Notts, born Oct. 6th 1871, who died Nov 29th 1901.
