Sidney Derrick Appleby was born in 1892 at Nottingham, the son of James a postmaster and Miriam Appleby née Derrick and the brother of George, Kate, Bertie, Harold and Edith Appleby. James was born in 1853 at Leybourne, Lincolnshire, Miriam Derrick was born in 1854 at Nottingham, married in 1874 at Nottingham they went on to have 10 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In 1901 the family lived at 53 Sandon Street Sherwood Rise Nottingham and in 1911 at 4 Wyresdale Road Bolton Lancashire. James and Miriam later moved to 'The Bungalow' Haywood Road Mapperley Nottingham.
Second Lieutenant Sidney Derrick Appleby initially served with the service number 6351 in the 19th battalion Royal Fusiliers, he landed in France on 14th November 1915. He was awarded a commission on 4th August 1916 and served with the 11th Battalion attached to the 8th battalion The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. He was killed in action on 18th July 1917 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate memorial Panel 41 and 43, Belgium.
